Voices from undergroundzero Print E-mail
The Voices from undergroundzero festival was presented in Bielefeld Germany Oct. 16 – 19, 2008 curated by Paul Bargetto and Christine Richter Nills. The festival presented eight plays from some of the best young writers in New York City including Sheila Callaghan, Thomas Bradshaw, Emily Conbere, Saviana Stanescu, Michael Yates Crowley, Sarah Hammond, and Anne Washburn. The plays were presented in German translation as staged readings and productions October 16 through 19 2008 in collaboration with Theater Bielefeld, Columbia University School of the Arts, Summer Play Festival (SPF), Schlosstheater Moers, Hamburger Theaterakademie, S. Fischer Theaterverlag Publishing, and “Theater der Zeit” Magazine. Festival roundtable discussions and symposia were led by the New York theater critic and dramaturg Helen Shaw.

Crumble, Lay Me Down Justin Timberlake Print E-mail
Crumble, lay me down Justin Timberlake by Sheila Callaghan premiered at the voices from undergroundzero festival in Bielefeld, Germany in October 2008 before entering the repertory. A meditation on loss, mothers and daughters, and the secret life of old buildings, the play is a tragicomedy of absurd proportions with visitations by Justin Timberlake, Harrison Ford and a loquacious and homicidal apartment.

Seranda si Vulpea Filozof by Slawomir Mrozek Print E-mail

On November 8th 2006 the National Theater of Constanta in Romania premiered a new production of Serenade and Philosopher Fox in a remounting of the original production from New York in Romanian in a brilliant new translation by Ioana Ieronim and with a Romanian cast. New costumes were designed by Emma Gavrila and the original set was re-created from Mimi Lien's design. Sound design was created by Liviu Manolache.

East River Commedia (Paul Bargetto, Artistic Director) announces the 4th annual undergroundzero festival of experimental theater, featuring over twenty New York City and European theater companies and artists at the legendary downtown performance venue Performance Space 122, July 6-25.

Founded in 2007, the undergroundzero festival gives producing artists a platform where risk-taking and innovation are both encouraged and expected. Artists are invited to bring a production of their choosing to join a flying repertory dedicated to radical play and experimentation. It may be a new work or a past production that deserves another life – whatever best serves the individual or collective artists growth and agenda.

The 2010 festival line-up will include new work from downtown New York companies and artists Performance Lab 115, Doris Mirescu, Leigh Evans, Aztec Economy, Pinchbottom Burlesque, José Zayas, Anna Brenner, Mercedes Murphy, Shoshona Currier, David Barlow, Saviana Stanescu, Jeff Grow, terraNOVA Collective, and East River Commedia. Also for the first time this year, the festival is expanding its programming internationally. Experimental theater companies Green Hours Theater (Romania), axis ballymun (Ireland), Compagnia Lafabbrica (Italy) and Theater Bielefeld (Germany) will all be bringing work to the festival for the first time.

Philosopher Fox by Slawomir Mrozek Print E-mail

Philosopher Fox premiered at the Malta International Theater Festival in Poznan, Poland, where it played outdoors on the roof of a new shopping center, the "Stary Browar" or Old Brewery. Crowds packed into the narrow space to see the show. One performace was presented in a parking lot at another shopping center to the delight of shoppers and passing motorists. In August 2004 the play was remounted in Central Park where it was played to a captive audience made up of the que of theater goers waiting to see Shakespeare in the Park. In January the play was remounted for a third time at Collective Unconscious where it was paried with Serenade, another Mrozek one act.

The Taming of the Shrew was developed at the National Theater of Constanta in Romania at the invitation of Artistic Director Beatrice Rancea. Constanta is Romania’s second largest city and lies on the Black Sea three hours south of Bucharest. The project was conceived with the playwright Saviana Stanescu in a four-week workshop in July and August of 2004. During this process a new translation and adaptation of the text was completed in a collaborative process with the actors. After a four-week break, rehearsals continued until the end of November. In addition to the new text, elements were incorporated using dance and the popular music of the Gypsy Taraf. The play premiered on November 19th in Constanta, and again in Bucharest on December 12, 2005.

In Cars/AutoMotive performs a work in progress showing at the 2010 undergroundzero festival July 24 & 25.

East River Commedia presents the first draft of their trilogy exploring American Identity. The search begins in the ubiquitous American machine – the automobile – with appearances by Henry Miller, James Dean, Jayne Mansfield, Curtis Turner and Dwight Eisenhower.

Directed by Paul Bargetto. Conceived and Created by Paul Bargetto, Heather Denyer, and Amy Jenson.

Thinly disguised as an animal fable, this play presents the character of Fox, a natural born killer with a conscience. In Serenade, Fox attempts to seduce the Hens of a local henhouse, under the beak of an overprotective Rooster. The play was paired with Philosopher Fox and played at the Collective:Unconscious in February of 2005.

Necessary Monsters - Chicago Print E-mail
On February 29 and March 1st Carla Kihlstedt - Necessary Monsters was performed at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art. Necessary Monsters is a staged song cycle based on the Book of Imaginary Beings, by Jorge Luis Borges composed by Carla Kihlstedt, directed by Paul Bargetto with a libretto written by Rafael Oses. The piece was performed by Carla Kihlstedt, Freddi Price, Matthias Bossi, Chris Fisher-Lochhead, Michael Mellender, Nina Rolle & Theresa Wong. Sets were designed by Mimi Lien, costumes by Amanda Bujak, and lights by Allen Wilner. The sound engineer was Mark Orton, the production manager was Jenny Raymond and the production assistant was Minna Choi. All photographs were taken by Piotr Redlinski.

East River Commedia reprised two plays, Broken Dogs Legs and Jamal Lullabies by Emily Conbere January 18 – 24th at the AbovgroundZero Festival.

These plays originally premiered in August, 2007 at the undergroundzero Festival at Collective:Unconscious. Broken Dogs Legs is directed by Rachael Rayment and stars Emily Conbere. Jamal Lullabies is directed by Paul Bargetto and stars Allison Jill Posner, Nicole Stefonek, Bekah Coulter, and Debbie Friedman

Hecuba by Euripedes Print E-mail

This production was presented in the summer of 2002 in the small coastal village of Assos on the Aegean Sea in Turkey. It was performed in the ruin of an ancient Greek temple, at the top of a mountain overlooking the town, only fifty kilometers from ancient Troy. The play relates the aftermath of the Trojan War: the Trojan Women and their fallen Queen Hecuba await death and slavery at the hands of the victorious Greeks and their own treacherous neighbors. The play was performed in Turkish and starred the legendary actress and singer Ayla Algan.

The Magnificent Cuckold at the Connelly Theater Print E-mail
East River Commedia presented "The Magnificent Cuckold" (Le Cocu Magnifique), the astonishing classic farce written in 1920 by the Franco-Belgian playwright Fernand Crommelynck, at the Connelly Theater, 220 East 4th Street, from September 14 to October 6 in a lively new translation by Ben Sonnenberg and Amiel Melnick. The piece was directed by Paul Bargetto, Artistic Director and starred Troy Lavallee as Bruno.

Striptease and Out at Sea by Slawomir Mrozek Print E-mail

In January of 2004, East River Commedia performed two one-act plays by Slawomir Mrozek, Striptease and Out at Sea. These dark and hilarious satires on the nature of power and its corruptions played to packed houses and won sparkling reviews in the press, including a piece by Margo Jefferson of the New York Times.

Necessary Monsters is a musical theater song cycle based on the The Book of Imaginary Beings by Jorge Luis Borges. Original score was composed by Carla Kihlstedt and original text and lyrics by Rafael Oses. The piece presents a menagerie of imaginary, literary and metaphorical creatures interpreted through music and text.
Necessary Monsters is a co-commissioning project by Alverno Presents in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the National Performance Network Creation Fund. The NPN Creation Fund is sponsored by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Ford Foundation, Nathan Cummings Foundation, Altria, and the National Endowment for the Arts (a federal agency). A Midsummer Nights Dream by William Shakespeare Print E-mail

Midsummer was produced at the Manhattan's Riverside Church as director Paul Bargetto's MFA Thesis. The production featured aerial dancers hanging in silk cocoons whose choreography mirrored the movement of the play and created a forest of bodies suspended in space.
